Not every New Jersey water system has an address-level inventory available yet. Where a system isn’t covered, the tool says so and shows the system-wide count instead of guessing. The larger systems still missing are listed here so you know before you search.

New Jersey’s 2021 lead service line law made every water system record the pipe material at each service connection and replace all lead and galvanized lines within ten years. The answer you see is the water system’s own record for that address, unedited. We never infer a material. If the system says unknown, the tool says unknown.

Galvanized steel pipe can trap lead released from older lead fittings upstream. New Jersey treats it like lead: it must be replaced by 2031 and the utility has to notify you.
The state law puts replacement on the water system, including the customer-owned side. Most systems replace both sides at no direct charge and recover the cost through rates. Ask the utility about its schedule and whether it needs an access agreement from you.
Unknown means no record yet. In newer subdivisions unknowns are almost always copper or plastic; in pre-1950 neighborhoods lead or galvanized is a real possibility. A plumber can check the pipe where it enters the house. Scratched lead is dull silver and soft, copper is penny-colored, galvanized is gray and holds a magnet.
If the line is lead, galvanized or unknown in an older house, a certified lab test of first-draw water is cheap and definitive. Until then, flush the tap before drinking and consider a filter certified for lead (NSF 53).
